This gal is great

avant garde?

Last night a Jen and I went to the Schönberg Ensemble – Featuring Barbara Hannigan.  The tickets were complementary (thanks Jen) so we went along not knowing much.  I had mentioned it to two people at my work who have degrees in music and they said we may not go for it.  They described it as ‘academic’.  ‘Sophie’ found a thing on it in youtube and it was very plinky plonky and abstract.  I couldn’t stop giggling.  He insisted that I text him when I get out to let him know how it went.

So, after passing Geoffrey Rush in the foyer, I sat down nervously sure that I would be kicked out for giggling.  (This has happened before - sometimes I can be uncontrollable).  The first piece (of four) was like suspense music from a movie soundtrack.  The second included 15 minutes of breath music.  Hooo. Cooo. Huhhhh.  etc.  I did nearly giggle.  But at the end we got to the plinky plonky piece.  They had dressed the main singer in Dominatrix gear and injected a lot of humour into it.  At one stage the conductor spun around to the audience astounded.  We laughed.  We didn’t cry.  There was a standing ovation.  I liked it….I didn’t stand…but it was pretty good.

Who knew I could do avant-garde?
